The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is an intensive area for the construction of urban rail transit in China and also an important node in the layout of the national railway transportation network. To better and actively serve the needs of regional economic development, Wuyi University began to prepare for the establishment of rail transit-related majors in 2010, enrolled undergraduates for the first time in 2011, officially established the School of Rail Transit in 2014, and in 2024, the school newly obtained the master's degree program in "Transportation". After years of construction, the school currently has 22 full-time teachers from well-known domestic railway universities, with more than 65% of them having a doctoral degree, 17 master's degree supervisors, nearly 600 undergraduate students, and more than 80 postgraduate students. It has initially formed a high-quality professional talent training system with a reasonable professional structure, excellent teaching faculty, advanced teaching conditions, close school-enterprise cooperation, and distinct school-running characteristics, becoming the main undergraduate university in South China for cultivating talents in national trunk lines, intercity and urban rail transit field.

The school currently has the only key discipline in the field of rail transit in Guangdong Province, namely "Rail Transit Equipment and Technology". It also has scientific research platforms such as the Guangdong (Jiangmen) Rail Transit Research Center and the Jiangmen Key Laboratory of "Intelligent Operation and Maintenance and Emergency Management of Rail Transit". In recent years, it has undertaken more than 50 national-level, provincial-level, municipal-level, and school-enterprise cooperation projects.

The comprehensive rail transit experiment center constructed by the school has been approved as the Guangdong Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center and the Guangdong Science Popularization Education Base. The implementation rate of employment destinations for graduates over the years ranks among the top in the school, and most graduates have already been employed in major rail transit enterprises in Guangdong province, such as China Railway Guangzhou Group Co., Ltd., Guangzhou Metro, Shenzhen Metro, Foshan Metro, Dongguan Metro, and CRRC Guangdong Co., Ltd,
