Wuyi University is situated in Jiangmen, a pivotal city in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). Jiangmen, nicknamed "Wuyi", enjoys a long history and profound cultural heritage. Following the establishment of the national platform "China-Pacific Island Countries Center for Disaster Risk Reduction and Cooperation", Wuyi University actively fulfills its new mission of serving key national development strategies, and focuses on developing its Pacific Island Countries Research Institute. In light of the strategic needs for industrial development in the GBA, Wuyi University has created high-level innovation facilities in the domains of biomedicine, new materials and intelligent manufacturing, such as the South China Institute of Biomedical Large Animal Model, China-Germany (Jiangmen) Artificial Intelligence Institute, the Lab of Digital Optical Chip, the Guangdong-Hong Kong Joint Lab for New Textile Materials, the Wuyi University Institute for Intangible Cultural Heritage of Chinese Overseas, and the Dual Carbon Research Institute. The South China Institute of Biomedical Large Animal Model is expediting the establishment of a world-class biomedical large animal model innovation and R&D platform integrating basic research, development and application, and technical services, in a bid to fuel up scientific research in regenerative medicine and new drug development through an array of world-leading research achievements.
The university has developed China's first industrial digital optical chip, and created a real-scene 3D digital software and hardware system with independent intellectual property rights and powered by BeiDou Navigation Satellite System. These have been recognized as world-leading technological achievements and widely applied in emergency management, smart city management and other domains. The university has been the first to find that carbon fiber can be used to sense temperature and force; developed biomimetic fingers with tactile tomography imaging capabilities; cooperated with partners to create the world's first rat with more than 30% human hepatocyte chimerism rate and human drug metabolism; formulated food safety standards for lecai (Eleutherococcus trifoliatus) and niudali (Millettia speciosa Champ); participated in revising pharmacopeia standards for Chenpi (sun-dried mandarin orange peel); and promoted capitalization of local agricultural products. Its accredited "Ultra Low Energy AC System Practice and Research Platform Development" project is considered world-leading, and its featured program of "Overseas Chinese Hometown Culture and Heritage" is domestically leading.
Wuyi University has been vigorously enhancing its talent pool. Its faculty comprises over 1,200 full-time educators, among which 55% are doctoral degree holders, approximately 180 are national/provincial high-caliber talents, and 8 scholars were included in the World's Top 2% Scientists List 2024.
