As the global threat of natural disasters continues to grow, the cooperation between China and Pacific Island countries in disaster risk reduction has made significant progress. Our reporter Guo Meiping visited a key facility in south China's Guangdong Province to explore the latest developments in this vital partnership.

China and Pacific Island Countries launched the Center for Disaster Risk Reduction Cooperation in February 2023 in Jiangmen City of southern China's Guangdong Province. The center aims to provide Pacific Island countries with disaster risk monitoring, early warning technology and services, as well as support of post-disaster emergency materials and rescue operation.

GUO MEIPING Jiangmen City, Guangdong Province "The center is the first multilateral cooperation platform established by China and Pacific Island countries focused on disaster prevention and mitigation. It has made significant strides in achieving its goals since its launch."

WANG CHUNYANG Executive Dean Pacific Island Countries Research Institute "We have conducted training for Pacific Island countries, with about 40 officials from disaster management departments across nine countries participating in the program. We also researched the types of natural disasters and disaster prevention and mitigation efforts in the Pacific Island countries."

The Pacific Island countries are mostly along a volcanic and seismic belt, making typhoons, earthquakes, and tsunamis common to the region. Natural disasters often last for long periods, sometimes exceeding 100 days. Researchers at the center have developed plans for both before and after a disaster.

HUANG HUI Researcher Pacific Island Countries Research Institute "We use meteorological satellites and other related technologies to provide early warning before a disaster. After a disaster, we focus on coordinating and managing supplies and logistics through big data technology and establishing emergency stations in affected areas."

Through sustained cooperation, the center hopes to work together with Pacific Island countries to address natural disasters, risks and other challenges, safeguard people's property, and provide valuable experience for international disaster prevention and humanitarian efforts.
