About
JIANGMEN: Jiangmen is a medium-sized
industrial city located on the western edge of the Pearl River Delta
in the Guangdong Province of China. It is known in China as the "Land
of Fish and Rice." For several hundred years Jiangmen has been
a collection and distribution point for trade in the Pearl River Delta
and has been a open port since the early 1800's. Guangdong Province
was the homeland of over 70% of the pre-World War II Chinese-American
immigrants who contributed to building California gold fields, railroads
and citrus industries.
In 1983, Jiangmen City was made the administrative
center for four other cities including Xin Hui, Tai Shan, Kai Ping,
He Shan as well as En Ping County and the Urban and Suburban Districts.
In June of 1984, Jiangmen was appointed an experimental city for the
national comprehensive reform and one of the Pearl River Delta Economic
Open Areas. Since these reforms, Jiangmen has become an economic powerhouse.
The Peng Jiang River winds its way through the downtown
area of Jiangmen, which translates appropriately into English as "rivergate."
Many trading ships, ferries and small fishing boats navigate the river,
sailing under the five bridges that join the city.
In its position as regional leader, Jiangmen has
made strong business and cultural connections to the outside world.
Foreign friends helped to build the city's Wuyi University and have
invested heavily in its many joint venture factories and food processing
plants which send products all over the world, including California.
